Pylos

Pylos

My Grand Tour also included the Peloponnese which was one of the most visited areas in the 19th century, especially Pylos, which remains a highly touristic area as a result of its rich history and captivating landscape. Amand Schweiger Lerchenfeld was an Austrian officer and author who was born in Vienna and toured Greece in 1875, stopping in the Peloponnese, specifically in the Bay of Navarino, which is modern-day Pylos. Recently, ‘Costa Navarino’ was built in the surrounding area of Pylos, which is considered to be one of the most luxurious hotels in all of the Peloponnese. Interestingly, it is located in the area where the Battle of Navarino was fought on October 20th, 1827. During that time, the Allied forces (Britain, France, and Russia), forced the Ottoman government to grant the Greeks autonomy within the empire. Moreover, within Europe, the British and French governments were pressured by their domestic groups to assist the Greeks. Committees were established which raised large sums of money for the Greek revolutionaries, and hundreds of volunteers were sent to fight in Greece. This instance of European assistance can parallel to the current dynamics that can be found within the European Union with respect to the bailout packages that are being negotiated (and recently accepted) in order to prevent Greece from declaring bankruptcy.

Costa Navarino

When Amand Schweiger Lerchenfeld toured Greece in 1875, approximately half a century after the Battle of Navarino, evidently there was not an extravagant resort that exists today such as Costa Navarino, therefore it was interesting being in that very same site, exactly 140 years later.

Despite the debt crisis taking place in Greece at the moment, it cannot be denied that the country has been an ultimate holiday destination for tourists all across the globe (including wealthy ones). The luxurious Costa Navarino resort responds to the demands and expectations of wealthy travelers who are prepared to spend large sums of money. Nevertheless, Costa Navarino has been a heated topic of discussion with respect to environmental protection. The building of the extravagant resort meant changing and destroying the landscape of the surrounding area, which for some meant destroying a part of Greece.
